Affordable kayaks, a look at the Sevylor Fiji Inflatable kayak

Affordable kayaksAt 10ft 4 inches long when fully inflated and with an intricately decorated appearance the sevylor Fiji inflatable kayak is an example of beauty and functionality put together. This beauty comes at an affordable price that is usually below 100 bucks making it one of the most affordable kayaks in the market with the second seat being detachable hence it can be removed when not in use.

The triple chambers of air that makes up the kayaks beams ensures that you can continue with your expedition even if one of the beams was to get a puncture from a sharp object making the boat quite a tough beauty. Its seams are taken through RF welding to ensure that they do not tear easily even when under pressure.

It comes with an easy to carry 5 piece paddling oar which has a shaft made of aluminum hence its very light and resistant to corrosion. The paddle is fitted with ribbed blades made of plastic that has a spoon shape to ensure that every stroke of the paddle is efficient. For ease of inflating and deflating the kayak it is fitted with double locking valves and mini double locking valves. Its whole system is made in a very air tight way making it very hard for a leak to occur.

With its light weight it has good handling capabilities despite not being fitted with a skeg, however it’s possible to acquire one and have it fitted into your yak to further improve its control and for good tracking. It is designed to effectively handle category one and two white waters although more experienced paddlers have been known to use it for category three white waters.

Use of kayaks is particularly appropriate for those who are in it for workout sessions. Kayaks help in working out since they push you into expending a lot of energy especially in rough waters. The kayak has been tested and certified by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) to have a carrying capacity of 400 pounds

With its upright posture seat that can be adjusted at users will, the sevylor Fiji inflatable kayak provides a comfortable ride for both users although the rear seat is more suited for kids. It is also fitted with spray blocking covers to ensure that water does not splash all over the pilot. It comes with a simple carrying bag that makes traveling, walking or even hiking with your kayak possible.

The strong 22 gauge Polyvinyl chloride material used to build this kayak makes it strong and tough enough to be used both on calm lakes as well as the rough waters. With the use of a simple foot pump that is provided on purchase of the kayak, you can inflate the vessel to its full length but for those who find this to be tiresome a twelve volt air pump that is electric can also be used. For easier climbing onto the kayak or climbing out of the kayak, the kayak comes with a grabbing line.

The evolution of kayaks from the traditional seal skin kayaks to modern inflatable kayaks

kayaksKayaks were originally built and utilized widely by the early inhabitants of the arctic in the Northern spheres mainly for hunting for food. They were ingeniously crafted from locally available products like animal hide, bones from whales and driftwood which can easily float on water. Fast forward to the 21st century and kayaks are now popular off the shelf outdoor leisure and sporting vessels.

Inflatable kayaks are particularly popular owing to their portability, durability and ease of use. They are usually made from Polyvinyl chloride, nitrylon or hypalon. PVC is a budget friendly, long lasting material that is manufactured in a variety of colors, however, when exposed to some chemicals, heat conditions and ultra violet rays of the sun PVC is easily damaged.

In most instances hypalon is the preferred kayak building material for most companies due to its availability, resistance to ultra violet rays and because of its durability. Nitrylon is a stronger substitute to PVC hence it is less likely to get punctured. Below is a list of some of the most common types of inflatable kayaks;

Sit- in inflatable kayaks represents the original design of kayaks that was originally used for most sporting varieties which were in use in many parts of Europe and North America. They have higher walls at the side which prevents too much water splashing into the vessel. It is also designed to ensure that the legs of the user are at all times concealed inside the kayak. They are widely used by those who enjoy kayaking in turbulent white waters.

In contrast to the sit-in kayaks, more recent kayaks that give the opportunity of paddling with the whole body exposed have been developed. This is the Sit on top kayak which has turned out to be a sensation on a lot of beaches worldwide. Due to their rigidity they are popular with leisurely open water paddling but their popularity in racing is also rising.

The invention of inflatable kayaks is good news for those who enjoy leisurely activities such as fishing and for kayaking beginners. Inflatable kayaks are very good due to their stability especially in relatively calm waters. These types of inflatable kayaks have the appearance of a canoe with comfortable deep seats and slightly higher walls that help in preventing water from getting into the kayak.

It is difficult to use a kayak without any water spray getting into a kayak. New design of kayaks are designed with a self-bailing system of valves i.e. they are built with a set of special valves that enable self-draining of any water that might find its way into the vessel.

Although sit-in kayaks may offer the promise of dry feet, sit on top kayaks provide much needed freedom of body movement. Sit on top kayaks are also fitted with adjustable seats that can be adjusted to various positions to suit the comfort of the pilot.

Inflatable kayaks have become very popular as recreational water vessels due to their affordability and their portability. There are inflatable kayaks that have been designed to carry more than one person. These are popularly known as tandem kayaks.

Kayaking and fishful thinking

When I was young, I enjoyed going out fishing with my grandfather and his friends. At times, it was on their boats and other times we would just go to fish by the riverbanks in a float tube. During that time, I learnt to catch catfish, perch, carp, bass and crappie. I also learnt different techniques, different lures and ways of casting different reels. I became an expert at watching a line.

At that time, I learnt some of the most important lessons that keep me going to date. I have learnt to appreciate nature for its awesome intricacies. I learnt to carry myself and behave appropriately around adults when I was very young. Most of the conversations between the men revolved around fishing stories, sports and war.

It was then that I was introduced to one of the famous books written by the legendary bass anglers, Tom Mann and Tom Carter, titled, ‘Think like a Fish’. In this book, the author talks about the same interesting topics, sports, war and fishing.

It begins by stating that in war, soldiers are trained to think like the enemy. In the same way, sportsmen should think like their opponents. Fishing on the other hand, is a different kind of sport. It is the only sport where the opponent or the prey is invisible. Therefore, if you do not think like the opponent, you cannot outsmart them. If you happen to catch the opponent without thinking, then consider yourself unskilled. You are simply lucky to catch them. In sport fishing, luck is not a word that augers well with the skilled anglers.

I am now an adult and the passion for fishing has remained with me. Every time I go out fishing with my sport pescador 12, I have one goal in mind, to outsmart the opponent. I decided to go for this sport pescador 12 for one main reason; it is the prime vessel for any self-respecting angler. This kayak is fitted with adequate slots, handles and dimples that enables one to carry as much fishing gear as possible.

My happiest moments are always when I am in the waters fishing. I also love going out to kayak with friends. I love to teach my inexperienced friends the intricate tricks of fishing. To do this I usually take the leaners on the tutoring tour on a tandem kayak. On a tandem kayak I am able to properly instruct the learner unlike when the learner is on a separate kayak.

Being on a tandem kayak also helps the beginner to have more confidence than when they are fishing from a kayak all alone. A tandem kayak is also very good for just relaxing in the company of a friend. Many times, tandem kayaking is suggested for people who need to bond together especially couples of working partners or associates.

I intend to use my kayaking passion to bond with my family, just like my grandfather, I want to use kayaking and fishing to build a lasting bond between me and my children.

Managing air pressure in an inflatable kayak

Inflatable kayaks are light, durable, stable and easily portable compared to the hard-shell kayaks. They are most suited for recreational use for both beginners and skilled kayakers owing to their wide range of benefits.

There are however some important aspects about inflatable kayaks that one should be familiar with. Unlike the hard-shell canoes, inflatable kayaks can be inflated or deflated easily to various sizes. It is important to know that the air pressure plays a vital role in the performance and the safety of the inflatable kayak.

In simple physics, it is noted that air pressure changes with the changing temperatures. Therefore, the air pressure inside an inflatable kayak will change with respect to the weather conditions and type of the material used to make the kayak. For instance, while paddling on warmer waters, the air pressure inside the kayak is bound to rise and the opposite is true in colder conditions.

It is therefore worthy to note that since a majority of the kayaks are inflated while on dry land, their inner pressures will automatically change when the vessel is launched to the waters. Being aware of these changes will therefore enable a kayaker to compensate for the changing air pressure. This will in turn enhance the performance of the vessel while ensuring the safety of the paddler. Using optimum pressure will increase the life of the canoe.

Changes during different times of the day

Most of the people embark on outdoor activities such as recreational kayaking early in the morning. Under normal circumstances, temperatures are low at this time. As the sun rises, the temperatures will also rise, and so is the inner pressure in the inflatable kayak.

Under such circumstances, it is advisable to slightly under inflate the kayak in order to allow room for expansion as the temperatures rise. The pressure can be added if the temperatures tend to remain low throughout the day. Keeping this in mind, it is also important to deflate kayaks that are pulled out of water and left in the sun for a long time.

Impact of over inflating or deflating a kayak

Over inflating a kayak reduces it durability. This is because there is too much stress applied on the material such as cloth, plastic, rubber and their bonding agents used to make these kayaks. It is also a safety risk to ride on an over inflated kayak. Cases of puncture are high in over inflated kayaks. An over inflated kayak tends to lose control especially when they hit on hard objects such as rocks.

On the other hand, an under inflated kayak is difficult to control and their performance is greatly hindered. They tend to be sluggish and non-responsive to paddling. One would require extra calories to maneuver such a kayak.

It is necessary to keep check of the air pressure in an inflatable kayak. This can be done simply by squeezing an area of the tube by hand. The movement of the vessel on waters can also indicate the amount of the air pressure. Carrying a suitable pump either hand or foot pump and a pressure gauge will remedy most of these problems.

Fishing kayaks 2Fishing kayaks are mainly built for fishing activities. While it is true that one can fish from any kayak, an experienced angler would have a different opinion. Recreational kayaks, tour kayaks and other types of kayaks may have some superior qualities such as good handling but will fall short of other important specifications necessary for fishing enthusiasts.

Fishing kayaks are specifically designed with various sorts of little extras to make the fishing expeditions more adventurous while offering maximum safety to the angler. The canoe has spots and dimples where one can attach baitcasting reels and other fishing gear within comfortable arm’s reach. Therefore before making the decision on the best type of fishing kayak to invest in, it is worthy taking the following into keen consideration.

Stability versus speed.

Generally, fishing kayaks are slow movers while on the other hand most sport kayaks were designed for speed lovers. The best fishing kayaks can be easily maneuvered in narrow channels enabling the angler to get to better fishing grounds where fish like to hide. Going for speed would forfeit stability which is very important for fishing enthusiasts. Fishing kayaks are considered more stable and offer ideal stability which is necessary when fishing.

Number of passengers

Fishing kayaks with an extra seat would be an added advantage especially for tandem kayakers. These kayaks will offer enough space for the extra individual without causing any discomfort. It is however important not to exceed the recommended weight stipulated for the vessel.

A Sit-on-Top or a Sit-In kayak

Both sit-on-top and sit-in kayaks can be used for fishing. It is easy to move in a sit-on-top kayak but one can keep warmer while in a sit in kayak. A sit kayak is also ideal for fishing in rough water. The choice of the design of the fishing kayak majorly depends on the fishing environments.

Comfortable seats and back rests

Though fishing is adventurous, it can turn out to be tedious when in the wrong vessel. Investing in adjustable seats and back rests ensures that one stays comfortable the whole time. The seats should be raised high enough to keep the anglers away from the kayak floor.

Storage space

Storage space is equally important for a good fishing kayak. Fishing will require a lot of gear such as baitcasting reels, lures, sinkers, amongst others which need ample storing space. This is without forgetting the space required to store the fish.

Anchor systems

Sometimes fishing requires staying in one place without moving around. This is difficult to do especially on a windy day. Being able to fish in a stationary position helps one to concentrate on one area especially if it is deemed to have a lot of fish. Regardless of the fishing method employed, (blind casting, sight fishing or trolling) an anchor system will enable you to fish systematically while covering the whole area thoroughly.

Safety equipment

Just like other type of kayaks, fishing kayaks need to be fitted with the necessary safety equipment such as reflectors and floaters. The color of the fishing kayak also plays an important role in ensuring safety. Vivid colors are preferable as they can be spotted from a distance.
